Scarborough Hospital, General Division Department of Physiotherapy has been using therapeutic system LEP 2000 for Low Energy Photonic and Laser Therapy (LEPT)

To whom it may concern

Scarborough Hospital, General Division Department of Physiotherapy has been using therapeutic system LEP 2000 for Low Energy Photonic and Laser Therapy (LEPT) developed by IMI inc. (Toronto, Canada) since September of 1991.

LEP 2000 is a multi-modality therapeutic system that allows treating a broad range of soft tissue pathologies including acute and cumulative trauma disorders, skin wounds and ulcers.

LEP 2000 is extremely effective in the treatment of acute soft tissue injuries, eg., crush injuries, contusions, sprains, and strains. There is an immediate decrease in edema and pain post treatment. It appears to minimize the bleeding into the tissues, resulting in faster healing with minimal bruising. Apart from the application of ice, LEPT is the only treatment modality that can be used within 24 hours post-injury. Ultrasound, Interferential, etc. could increase the bleeding and are therefore contraindicated during this time period.

LEP 2000 is also very useful in conditions of a more chronic nature and is chosen over other modalities for its effectiveness in the treatment of chronic pain, Lateral Epicondylitis, Achilles Tendonitis and Planter Fasciitis. A double blind clinical trial that our hospital participated in revealed that sub-acute and chronic pain was reduced by 40% after 2 LEFT sessions. In this study LEPT was found to be 4 times more effective for pain relief than ultrasound.

Another major clinical application of LEP 2000 used at Scarborough Hospital, General Division is in Scar Management. It is used in our Hand Program over post-operative incisions to promote healing, minimize adhesions and encourage the development of a soft flexible scar. This is of great benefit in hand surgery, as there are so many structures in such a small space and if adhesions develop, the range of motion and function can be severely limited.

Scarborough Hospital has been using therapeutic system LEP2000 LEP 2000 is also used in our hospital to treat chronic recalcitrant skin ulcers of different etiology (diabetic, decubitus, venous, etc,). We observed a healing rate of over 80% of chronic ulcer closure using LEPT for over 100 recalcitrant ulcers tor the last 10 years. A double blind study revealed that LEPT using LEP 2000 resulted in 3.4 times acceleration of chronic venous ulcer healing.

Scarborough Hospital, General Division currently has 3 LEP 2000 devices and approximately 30 patients benefit from LEPT on a daily basis (about 6,000 patient-visits per annum). Another LEP 2000 therapeutic system is used in the Employee Rehabilitation Unit to treat hospitals employees. The LEP 2000 is an excellent effective multi-modality adjunct to physiotherapy and provides many patients with faster recovery times.

We did not observe any side effects using LEP 2000 therapeutic system.

We also appreciate the ongoing research that is being conducted by IMI on the healing mechanisms of LEPT, improvement of existing and development of new clinical protocols of LEPT.

The Ontario Health insurance Plan (OHIP) provides the compensation for Low Energy Photonic and Laser Therapy using LEP 2000 therapeutic system in our hospital.
